Build Traffic with Keywords – Think Like Customers
admin | September 12, 2008
Figuring out what terms “keywords” your customers search on Google, Yahoo & MSN is one of the most important things you can do for building your business.
Think like the consumer and not the seller. For example, if you sell embroidered items then what type of searches will your customers be doing? Your first thought might be the keyword “embroidered gifts” is what I should push on my site – you’d be wrong and still thinking like the seller.
Consumers know exactly what they want. They don’t search so broadly. If it’s a t-shirt, then they type in tshirt. Your job is to use this information to your benefit.
The more precise your keywords are the more targeted and relevant your site becomes.
Embroidered gifts is a fine place to start, but don’t stop there. Narrow things down, then keep narrowing. You want to write about as many possible options as you can humanly think of.
Starting keyword: embroidered gifts
- personalized gifts
- personalized handbags
- personalized tshirts
- personalized bowling shirts
You get the idea.
Once you’ve found your kewords, be productive with them. You have a website…use it! If your web site consists of only a store, add a blog.
Write about the different items you have for sale. If you embroider handbags, make a post and name it using the keywords you want your site to rank for. The words in the URL are very important to search engines. Avoid having your pages look like www.yoursite.com/page1/8_08, instead make your pages work for you, by naming them properly. Maybe your want to push your embroidered handbags as Mother’s Day gifts, make a page displaying some of your favorites and title the page using the keywords you want to rank for www.yoursite.com/personalized-handbags-moms-love
If you want to rank in the search engines for particular words, make sure those words are on your site.
